The court of honor took place today at the Newburgh Park. Lots of families came together to share a meal and then Captain D presented all the rank advancements and merit badges. Captain D is an integral part of our troop. He maintains all the records and does so out of his deep love for scouting. Today his job is to present the scouts with the merit badges they earned over summer camp and since the last court of honor. As the troop master, Bill congratulates them and hands them their badges and cards.
Notice that the official handshake in scouts is with the LEFT hand. According to Wikipedia, this is because the left hand is closest to the heart as well as an ancient sign of bravery and respect. Warriors carried their shields in their left hands. It was stated that Ashanti chiefs offered their left hands and said, “In our land only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so we must drop our shields and our protection.”
Then Walker and Jerett were promoted in rank from Star to Life. Walker has been working hard to complete his responsibilities so he can make the rank of Eagle and begin his Eagle project before high school.
The last part of our court of honor was to celebrate the outgoing troop leader, Gene. The troop made him that special plaque and everyone signed it. Gene tirelessly led our scouts for many years. His two sons have now made Eagle and completed their Eagle projects so it was time for him to step down. He continues to be a great support of the troop and of Bill and we are tremendously grateful for his service.
Ken got a plaque with the very same quote when he finished his service to the Cub Scout pack. Matthew does his Eagle project on the 31st! Say a prayer.
