Fall Break: Bowling

Next week Mason’s scout group is going to go bowling to earn a belt loop.  We will be out of town for our annual AAP trip and consequently, Mason will have to miss it.  I think he was disappointed that he would not be able to go with his friends but more importantly, that he […]

Soup in A Pumpkin

This is a standard meal in our house once Fall arrives.  I got this recipe years ago when from a fellow culinary club member.  It is a great hit every time I serve it and makes for a wonderful dish to deliver to families in the months of October and November.  I often prepare a […]

The Southern Festival of Books

{photo source} When Bill learned that Rick Riordan was going on tour to promote his latest book in the Heroes of Olympus series, he started making plans to take Walker.  One of his speaking engagements was part of the 25th Annual Southern Festival of Books in Nashville.  The Celebration of the Written Word took place […]

The Lawn Apprentice

Bill decided it was time to have Walker help with some of the yard work beginning with mowing the lawn.   After a preliminary lecture about the lawn mower and safety guidelines, he coached Walker from behind and then let him go. I was impressed and Walker was pleased. He decided he would like to alternate […]

(Grand)parents’ Day 2013

For weeks now there has been a buzz around the house and secretive singing practice as the boys rehearsed for the the Grandparents’ Day program.  Music Through the Decades was this year’s theme.  Walker led part of the opening prayer with the principal and several of his classmates. Our new (and very energetic) music teacher […]

Gone Fishin’

Mason has always enjoyed fishing but he always felt very bad for the fish when they were caught on the hook.  However, at the campout he learned that the fish only feel “a little pressure,” or so the story goes.  We all know about truth and fishing stories but for now Mason has decided fishing […]

A Brisk Walk to School

Today was National Walk to School Day and St. John’s was happy to participate.  The event dovetailed nicely with our Heroes Wellness Grant.  Unfortunately, there are no sidewalks that lead to our school.  Most students arrive to school via carpool and bus so our school organizers set up a remote drop-off site about a mile […]

Learning Man To the Rescue

Walker’s current teacher is passionate about writing.  He has been doing more essays and writing prompts and is learning quite about the writing and revision process.  The fruits of their labor are paying off as Walker’s piece was published in the local newspaper.  If we could only bring Learning Man to life!

Following Suit

Just like his brother, Mason likes to retreat to the top of the play structure in the backyard with his book.  His current favorite reads include the Jack Stalwart series, the Magic Tree House series and the Humphrey series.
