This year we scaled way back on projects. Mason chose to make Peanut Butter Squares from a recipe he found on YouTube for his cooking project. He made these several times before to prepare and when we got back from Vegas, I made them with him again. He and Bill cut them very precisely at 1” by 2” and then plated them according to the project guidelines.
Walker made a computer poster entitled Dissecting Your Hard Drive.
His poster included an actual hard drive and other pieces of computer hardware which he labeled both on a diagram and on the actual drives. He addressed the following topics:
How do you measure the size of the drive?
What is a hard disk drive used for?
How does a hard disk drive work?
Click of death
Backup
Controller board
SSD vs. HDD
Pata vs. Sata
As soon as we could on Monday, we headed to the fairgrounds to see how the projects were judged.
It took a while to find Mason’s cookies because they were removed from the plate and missing a bite. He earned a blue award!
Walker’s project earned a blue award, a purple award and was selected for state!
Walker spent a lot of time participating in activities at the Warrick County Fair. He decided to join the Junior Leaders group which meant he had the opportunity to work four shifts in the eponymous sponsored food booth. Bill and I actually worked two of those shifts with him. I now can say I have operated a fry daddy. Bill also manned the fryer until he switched caps and became the grill master.
Wednesday was a full day at fair. We started at 8 AM with Robotics for two hours and then we had a short break until early afternoon for our junior leaders shift in the food booth. While we were grilling and frying, Bill watched the rocket and airplane launch and the quiz bowl. Wednesday night we also had to work for our club at the County food booth. Our shifts overlapped so Bill started in the County food booth until we joined him an hour later. We all went home glazed with grease but having done our part.
Thursday was the club softball tournament. Walker wanted to participate so we off we went. They won a game and lost a game but had a lot of fun.
Friday afternoon was the parade of champions when everyone who has earned a purple, champion or reserve champion award is recognized with a t-shirt and certificate. Hurray for Walker and his friend, Aidan too.
Except for one more shift on Saturday at the junior leaders booth on Saturday night, this wrapped up our time at fair this week.
I like 4-H and county fairs better than state fairs!
Cookies cut precisely into 1″ by 2″ bars. Impressive, indeed. They looked delicious. Congrats, Timex! I’ll bet the cookies took a lickin’ too.
Impressive display with the computer parts. Walker, do you give lessons to grandmothers?
I have a second grader doing “How do computer chips work?” for his Passion Project. I may have to have him talk to Walker!
