My son has always been a handful but now it’s official. Walker is five!
We had a great birthday celebration for Walker today. He headed to school today with boxes of raisins as his choice for snack today. (School policy permits only healthy treats–no cake, candy, cupcakes or cookies. I got off very nicely with boxes of raisins.) There is a special birthday tradition at school which has not completely been explained to me. In five year old explanation, there was a sun candle but the rest of the details are a little cloudy. Oh well, it’s fun to be five and eventually I’ll get to ask the teachers what this all meant.
After school, Papa (my dad) treated Walker and Mason to a special ice cream cone from the Golden Arches. The boys really enjoyed the new playland too.
We had a short break at home before heading out to Walther’s Miniature Golf. Walker was very specific in his request to play golf at the place with indoor and outdoor golf. Papa, Walker, Bill, Mason and I putted around the 18 holes while Grandma (my mom) captured the moments on film. Walker continues to mature as a golfer but surprisingly Mason is developing a unique technique too. He actually putts rather well despite his mere two years of age. The weather was amazing today and it was a treat to be outside on a cool, sunny evening.
The birthday boy made a special request for dinner–big waffles. So breakfast for dinner it was. Our menu included Belgium waffles, bacon and fresh fruit and cake and homemade ice cream for dessert. In addition, Walker requested trick birthday candles which worked perfectly on his mini cake.
We wound down the evening with presents. It was indeed a special treat to have Grandma and Papa here for Walker’s birthday and gifts and cards were extra fun. So far we received a package from New York from Aunt Monica, Uncle Kyle, Taylor and Caitlin, a birthday ice cream cone and gift card from Auntie Steena, Uncle Bob, Jacob and Jordan and a package of Tumbling Monkeys from our friends Benjamin, Ethan and Aubrey in Phoenix.
Walker’s quote during presents, “Birthday gifts are so surprising!” as he ripped open each package. He is a happy camper and so are we.
Standby for details about the birthday party extravaganza on Friday night!
PS. For those of you who were wondering, I did not finish the happy birthday quilt for today. Working under such a deadline diminished the fun of creating it so I abandoned it to spend time with Walker, Mason, Bill and my parents. It will get done, probably in the next few weeks…unless I start one of my other quilt projects. 🙂
I love that he got to plan out his day exactly the way he wanted. I love big waffles for dinner too.
