Storming Los Angeles

For quite some time, Bill has wanted to take Walker and Mason to see his mom in Los Angeles but our free weekends have been so limited lately. Looking at the calendar, it appeared that the weekend I was at Auntie Faye’s memorial was a weekend the boys did not not have a lot of activities planned (which is one reason I was able to sneak away myself).  Missing school is harder now that they are older so I had not wanted to pull them from school for Auntie Faye’s memorial mass on Friday.  Instead, they left right after school for a quick weekend trip with Bill.  They packed a ton in!

Bill surprised them with a BMW convertible and they had a blast.  Before making their way to Bill’s mom’s house, Bill showed them the sights.

They started in Malibu and made their way to the Pacific Palisades.  They stopped at Gladstone’s where Walker had eaten this summer with my parents.

I was so impressed that Bill took them to the library.  They enjoyed a tour of the stack and the art outside.  It turns out libraries are also great places to use the facilities which are harder to come by in the LA area.  I love the mosaic work and I’m fairly certain Bill had them pose with these for me.

They drove through the Valley toward Bill’s mom’s house and grabbed lunch at Waba Grill.

Besides having an amazing backyard with glorious landscaping, my mother in law has two adorable dogs.  Sophie is the larger and Barney the smaller.

Mason likes to think of them as his;  they just have California residency. From the sound of it, they spent the afternoon with Grandma Suzanne and had a wonderful time.

That evening they drove back toward Manhattan Beach to their hotel and had dinner at Pancho’s.

I heard it tasted even better than it looked.

Sunday morning they drove up to Hollywood for morning mass. I was flabbergasted to hear that they went at 7:30 AM

but such an early start allowed them time to get a great breakfast at The Waffle.

The searched for some special stars

and drove around to see how close they could get to the Hollywood sign.

One of the last stops was the Griffith Observatory.  Bill spent a lot of time here growing up and he really wanted to take the boys there.

The final destination before going back to the airport was Travel Town.  Both Walker and Mason loved hanging out with the trains when we lived in California.  They have grown up some but they still fancied it.

As luck would have it, my return from Las Vegas was delayed by several hours.  While I was supposed to land a few hours before they did, in the end, we landed minutes apart.  We met at the curb, grabbed luggage and started sharing stories of our respective trips.
