In honor of Noah Webster’s 260th birthday, St. John the Baptist School hosted a Vocabulary Day and Parade. The sixth, seventh and eighth grade students chose a vocabulary word and then dressed up to visually define the word.
The teachers got in on the fun as well.
Mason’s word was preternatural. Webster defines Mason’s word, PRETERNATURAL as such:
adj. 1: existing outside of nature 2: exceeding what is natural or regular : EXTRAORDINARY (wits trained to preternatural acuteness by the debates— G. L. Dickinson) 3: inexplicable by ordinary means especially : PSYCHIC (preternatural phenomena)
Mrs. Hochmeister and Mrs. Flatt paraded down the hall as did the other students.
They moved at a pretty fast clip so it was hard to get a good photo of Mason.
He wore his Yoda robe and made an aluminum foil hat which he discarded pretty quickly. Next year we will have to up our game.
After the parade, the students all congregated in the arena for an awards ceremony.
Mrs. Janney, looking mighty verdant, recognized students and teachers in the following categories: Most Beautiful, Brightest Costume, Most Colorful, Best Use of a Box, Best Dressed, Best Five Syllable Word, Best Noun, Most Creative Use of Tape, Best Use of Props, Best Adjective, Most Creative and Most Elegant.
I hope they repeat this because it was great fun and next year, maybe they will publish a master list of the words they chose.
What a great idea!
