Friendship is comforting.
Almost twenty five years ago, Bill and I were living in Brooklyn. I was working at a corporate office for Westin Hotels and Resorts. Friday nights we would get together with several good friends and over a good meal, conversation would flow easily about books, culture and life.
Twenty five years later, one of those Brooklyn friends now lives in Minnesota and I live in Indiana. She traveled to Indianapolis to give a lecture. We met on a Friday at the Westin Hotel and over a good meal, we caught up on life, books and a whole lot more.
Her pick for lunch was Mikado. She suggested I try chirashi. The word means scattered in Japanese and mine included a sampling of fish and vegetables. They are usually served on a bed of rice but I opted for salad greens instead. It was light, fresh and filling.
After lunch we walked past the food trucks and returned to the hotel. We attended a Children’s Literature Association lecture and then retired to her room to chat while she worked on her presentation about Vera B. Williams, writer, artist and activist. The conversation was carefree and easy. Time had stood still for us.
Later that afternoon, Lisa and I parted ways and I drove to Bloomington. Tomorrow I will pick up scouts at camp there and drive them back to our neck of the woods. Since I was there, I had to take advantage of the culinary offerings.
I chose Anyetsang’s Little Tibet. My meal started with a green salad, a small bowl of lentil soup and temo, steamed buns served with melted butter. YUM!
The entrée was Kham Amdo Thugpa, a hearty stew with homemade Tibetan noodles, tofu, daikon, onion, tomato, green onion and cilantro. It was satisfying and warming.
A good friend, good food, good times. I was in heaven.
Love this!
