This paper was supposed to be about something that was really hard that we accomplished. For me, what I think about was last year when I hiked Cotopaxi. If you don’t know what this is, Cotopaxi is the second tallest volcano in Ecuador and has a glacier at the top. When I was in Ecuador I was allowed to hike it. You start the hike at about 9,000-10,000 feet above sea level. I started my journey to the glacier and refuge by picking up a rock to keep as a souvenir. Then I went up the steep hill for a bit where you decide if you want to go on the path that is curvier and a bit slower, or a steeper path that is faster. I chose the curvier path. It wasn’t easy and I had to stop every few minutes for a break. Because of the elevation it was hard to breathe and I had to stop every 15 minutes to breathe. I thought about quitting but I remembered that they had a refuge at the top with food. It was only about a mile and a half, but it wasn’t easy. I got to the refuge and went inside and watched The Office on my phone. I couldn’t believe I did it.
Mason wrote the above reflection for his health class. I wanted to include it here because I was so impressed by his insight and perspective. He certainly did persevere and we are so glad he did.
