Off to the Movies

We went to the AMC theater today.  Unfortunately, it was closed. Fortunately, we were more interested in the destination than the movies themselves.  Bill wanted to walk from our house to the West Side.  He chose the AMC because it was the farthest destination from our home before USI.  Google maps calculates the driving distance at 13.5 miles.  We drove two cars out to the AMC this morning, parked Bill’s car there, and drove my car back.  Then we lotioned up with SPF, filled our water bottles and hit the road.

Our adventure took 6.5 hours (including breaks).  We walked for a little longer than 5.5 hours and traveled a total distance of 16.5 miles.  Since many streets do not have sidewalks, we tried to shift our route to streets that did.  We took advantage of the paved greenway when possible.  Otherwise, we walked carefully on the shoulder or on the grass along the curb.

This was our route from our home.

From our home, we walked Lincoln Avenue to Plaza Avenue (where we found the Free Library),

Plaza Avenue to Washington Avenue,

Washington Avenue to Green River Road,

Green River Road to Covert Avenue and

Covert Avenue to Highway 41.

We walked a stretch of the High Rail Trail from Covert Avenue to Walnut Avenue and then Walnut Avenue to Sixth Street (where we encountered the closed Starbucks),

Sixth Street to Main Street (where Signature School is) and Main Street to Second Street.

We picked up the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage here and took it to Franklin Street. From there we took Franklin Street to Mount Vernon Avenue

From there we took Franklin Street to Mount Vernon Avenue, and Mount Vernon Avenue to West Virginia.  (At this corner sits Leroy’s Tavern.  What a great sign! Church and booze, a typical pair.)

The final stretch was West Virginia to Rosenberger Avenue. Rosenberger is where the strip of stores begins on the West Side.  We crossed the Lloyd here and then snaked our way through the parking lots until we arrived at the AMC Theater.

We stopped once at Schnucks on Green River Road for beverages and the bathroom, at River City for coffee while I ate my packed lunch, Thorntons gas station at the Lloyd and Rosenberger Avenue for more beverages and bathrooms, and at Starbucks on the West Side.

The sight of the car was welcome on such a warm day. We gratefully got in the air conditioned car and headed home. We both feel we earned a hearty dinner and anticipate a solid night’s sleep.

  • Wow, this is awesome. (That sign is classic, too!)
I tried to go through your route in my mind– I’m worried about some of those roads being busy and no sidewalks? But we won’t tell your mom. 🙂
