This Christmas we decided to make the most out of having Mom and Dad with us by treating them to experiences and events rather than wrapped gifts. Since they had never been to a University of Evansville basketball game, this was a perfect start. Going to a college basketball game was somewhat reminiscent of my childhood because almost every season we would head up to Loyola Marymount College to watch them play against my dad and Monique’s alma mater, St. Mary’s College.
Now, the interesting thing about this game was that the opposing team was the Butler Bulldogs. Master Mason is a big fan of Butler, basically because of the mascot. The divided allegiance between the boys added an element of fun since Walker was rooting for the Aces and Mason was rooting for the Bulldogs. Bill, being the New Yorker that he is, had hoped for some real animosity in the crowds since both schools are Hoosier based. However, it was all fun and games…literally. As far as crowds go, the reactions were quite calm. Having been to several Yankees versus Mets games and Rangers versus Islanders games, we were disappointed there was no booing, popcorn throwing or fist fights but I guess these Hoosier fans held to a more polite decorum.
The game was played at the Ford Center. All of the courtside activities kept the kids engaged. Dad and Bill watched the game while Mom and I knit. Don’t tell…I was knitting for Mom. I can be sneaky that way.
The final score was Butler 68, Aces 59 so in the end, we drove home having rooted for a winning team.
I hate to sound like a completely nerdy English teacher, but I love the way you wrote this …. such fun details of the Hoosier vs. NY behavior and you and your mom knitting. 🙂
First I have to say, “Go Gaels!” Can’t resist. Secondly, did they play, “Who let the dogs out?” at any point. Finally, I wish there was a picture of you and Mom knitting, although I can see it pretty well in my head!
A fun time for all. I ended up with a cozy, cuddly cowl.
What a super sneak! 🙂
