Inspection at Camp
It’s been a joy of watching Mason pop up in this week’s camp photos on Bunk 1.
He and the Amantacha unit survived the first night of inspection.
Mason absolutely loves gaga ball. As soon as we get to camp, he makes his way to the gaga pit. He’s watching this game in the upper corner but I’m willing to bet he will jump in as soon as he can.
It looks like it was hot for Monday night inspection.
Monday night is Dance Party Night in the dining hall. Mason denies being in the center of the dance circle but it sure looks like he was having a blast.
When I saw everyone with belly faces, I suspected Mason’s unit leader, Bush, was involved. Sure enough, he had the magic marker. Bush (the man wearing the yellowish shirt above) looks pleasantly pleased with himself.
As hot as it was this week, I’m surprised to see Mason wearing a jacket since he and his unit were on their way to riflery.
Concentration makes for a great shot.
Friday is the day when the campers work toward earning arrowheads at the various activities at camp. To earn an arrowhead, one must demonstrate competence in that area. Mason’s got council and swimming in his hands.
So today as we waited outside the old dining hall for the campers to be released, we heard the final announcements and the great unit cheer off. The biggest uproar was heard for the winners of the Golden Arrowhead. According to the website, “a unit winning the Golden Arrowhead signifies that they were able to prove their competence across many areas, including activities, teamwork, strength, intelligence, model behavior, creativity and camp spirit. Elements that contribute to the Golden Arrowhead determination include activity achievements (such as # of bull’s-eyes at archery), Friday activity achievements (winning Tug of War or Marathon), Inspection achievements (from evening inspection and cabin inspection), skits, living the theme, volunteering on their own time (picking up trash, etc.), Snog, etc.”
The competition was fierce but Mason’s unit won by half a point. He proudly showed us the Golden Arrowhead and was especially excited to point out that he was the first Selby to win one.
The only thing that made saying goodbye to camp and his unit leaders, Ethan and Bush, easy was knowing that he would be back in three weeks. Then it was time to load up the car, have our traditional post-camp brunch at Cracker Barrel® and start the laundry.
We have one more toy-soldier pose from Mason in the belly face pose. Papa makes much better faces. Maybe he could go to camp with the boys next year and teach them how.
