Camping at Fall Creek Falls

Walker and Bill went off this weekend to Fall Creek Falls for the monthly camping weekend.  According to the website, Fall Creek Falls State Park is Tennessee’s largest and most visited state park. It is 26,000 acres across the eastern top of the rugged Cumberland Plateau and features cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and lush stands of virgin hardwood timber.  There are four waterfalls—Piney Falls, Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek Cascades but Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States.

After setting up camp, they set off to hike the area.  There were a lot of stairs leading to down to the base of one of this waterfalls and when one climbs down, one must climb back up.

The pictures Bill sent do not do justice to the natural beauty they  saw.

From what I heard, they worked up quite an appetite but food always tastes better when cooked out on a campout.

Mr. Mason and Bill were the chaperones with Jerett, Walker, Mason and Joseph.  They did an awful lot of climbing and hiking this weekend.

There were many rocks to climb and rest and getting to some of them required creek walking and maybe an occasional swim.

To get to the base of one of the waterfalls, they had to do a cable hike as the descent was extremely steep and there were not always rock holds for their hands.  Again, they traveled up and down the same route.

They discovered two suspension bridges.  Unlike the one at Camp Ondessonk, these really swayed and there was a limit of six people crossing at a time.

Bill and Walker were so enthusiastic about Fall Creek Falls that I anticipate a family field trip there sometime in the not too distant future.
