It’s not an official competition but in our house it’s important to arrive at camp early. This means we usually try to leave for the Sunday camp drop off by 7 am. This week we left a little earlier because someone who shall remain nameless but who writes this blog wanted to add a Starbucks stop to the itinerary with the already planned breakfast stop for the boys. We also added a stop at Subway for sandwiches. It turns out that Subway does not open until 9 am so we had to kill 15 minutes before we could order.
When we pulled up to the camp entrance, Bill shifted to neutral and we coasted to the gate. It’s at least a mile from the entrance to the gate on a single wooded road.
We were first.
More excitingly, we were first for the first week of summer camp this year. Four happy faces and several high fives later, we got out for our traditional walk to the front entrance. We waved at counselors as they drove back from breakfast off property and then walked back to the car. One privilege of being first is the right to be the human gate opener. Walker really enjoys this job.
This week Mason is doing traditional camp in the unit of Amantacha and Walker is doing an adventure camp called Hike, Bike, Paddle and Climb.
For check-in at the units, Bill and Mason were a pair and I accompanied Walker. Actually, I followed Walker. I could not keep up with his long strides.
We said goodbye to Walker after the swim test and walked back up to the Trading Post and gaga pit with Mason.
He could not wait to have his first choco taco of the season. Bill and I said our goodbyes to Mason and headed home for our week at the empty nest.
