Hello 2018

It’s a brand new year and I am greeting it with joy, grand hopes and dreams.  As I’ve done in the past, I’ve chosen a word to help me keep focus.  Actually, the word chose me.  I had been thinking a lot of my desire to finish a bunch of projects this year, especially ones that have been outstanding. For some reason, the word finish didn’t quite feel right so I began looking at synonyms.  That’s how resolve found me.

Resolve can be either a noun or a verb.  According to the Cambridge Dictionary, as a verb resolve means to end or solve a problem or difficulty.  It also means to make a determined decision.  As a noun it means strong determination.

I liked the spirit of the word in both parts of speech because finishing isn’t my only goal.  Some projects on my lists are not meant to come to fruition and need to be abandoned. Others are long term tasks that need to be tackled in small bits.  There are also a lot of tasks that fall in between those two extremes.  Resolve will be my guide as I make my way through the days of 2018 and the many projects that have been waiting in the wings.

Now, about that tumbler.  For the last few years in November, Starbucks has sold a reusable tumbler that entitled the bearer to a free cup of brewed coffee every day during the month of January.  I thought it would be a nice gift for my dad for his birthday since he and I share a love for coffee and specifically Starbucks coffee.  I bought him the mug and included a note inside that said every day in January, he could text me when he got his cup filled and I would think of him.  Unfortunately, the mug got damaged in transit. I had to file a claim with the post office but was afraid I wouldn’t be able replace it in time.  My amazing sister Laynie called eight stores, tracked one down and hand delivered it to my dad.  Mission accomplished.

The story does not end there.  When I brought that mug home and showed it to Bill, I saw a fleeting but panicked look in his eyes.  It vanished when I revealed that it was a gift for my dad.  Fast forward to Christmas morning, I opened a gift from Walker. Inside I found my very own January Starbucks mug.  Now my dad and I are twins and I resolve to get my money’s worth out of my tumbler.
