Adventure Camp :: Walker Edition

Walker went to Horse Adventure Camp this week and his unit was much smaller than the regular units of Boys’ Week.  Their session opened with the general camp inspection but a few days into the week, they headed off for their horse adventures.  Walker scored the job of flag bearer at opening inspection.

Sunday and Monday Walker got to know his horse, Savannah.  His unit slept in the barn.

Tuesday the group headed out on the trails.  The basic routine for the day involved trail riding to a location, setting up camp, caring for the horses, cooking their meals and sleeping under the stars.  They rode and camped on Ondessonk property and out in the Shawnee National Forest.

Every place they stopped to camp, they had to setting up the high lines where the horses were attached.   Walker explained that there were carabineers on the line to tie the horses to but there were also some for tying up the line to get the tension on the high lines.  When it was time to tension the lines, they threw the blanket over them.  That way the campers had something to hold onto when the lines were being secured and they avoided rope burns.

Tuesday afternoon they arrived at Jack Davis’ to camp.  They worked on their ecology arrowhead and made dinner.

This group had a lot of time to hang out and get to know each other.

Here is Walker with Savannah on Friday.

Looks like Doc, Megan, Savannah and Walker were waiting to head out.  Friday night they were back at the barn.  I’m grateful that one of the campers had a camera to share these pictures with us.
