While brioche might evoke the notion of the French pastry, in this case, it’s all about knitting. Brioche is a particular technique involving yarn over stitches and slipped stitches to achieve a double layer of stacked stitches. It was a technique that I have known about but tried only once.
Brioche Knitting is prevalent in knitting around the world but was introduced to knitters in the United States by Nancy Marchant in her book, Knitting Brioche. When I learned that she, an Evansville native, was coming back from the Netherlands to teach an introductory class, I signed right up.
I took the class with one of my best knitting friends and 19 others. Nancy brought lots of gauge swatches and sample garments in the brioche style. The green sample is hers and the purple one is my swatch.
The shawl I modeled is in two color brioche. This one was fully reversible and quite beautiful. I may attempt to make it at some point in the future. It’s more advanced that the skills I have right now, but Nancy assures me that I can manage it after a little practice.
After an afternoon of brioche, I truly am hungry for more.
I did think you were going to talk about food, but instead maybe the hardest craft I have ever heard of! Of course I failed at straight knitting and can barely crochet! The outcome is gorgeous….yours I mean.
I didn’t really understand any of the knitting talk, but it was pretty to look at!
You continue to impress me with your knitting prowess!
WOW! The shawl sample is quite cool! It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this new knitting super power!
