Mason’s scout group had a field trip today to satisfy a requirement to visit a local place of historical interest. The den chose the LST Memorial which is a memorial ship built for World War II. According to its website, the LST (Landing Ship, Tank) is an amphibious vessel designed to land battle-ready tanks, troops and supplies directly onto enemy shores. Our LST’s most notable operation was D-Day at Omaha Beach, Normandy.
We were able to see the Main Deck, Troop Berthing, Tank Deck, Mess Deck, Galley, Stern of the ship where the guns and the anchor are located, the Wheel House, Officer’s Country and the Captain’s Cabin.
This is how the tanks entered the bottom of the LST.
It was a successful trip. No one went overboard, no guns were discharged and no levers were flipped on this fully operational ship. Each scout brought home a souvenir pen made from a bullet and a few stories to tell about his adventures aboard a historical ship.
