Mason has been preparing for several months for the M.A.T.H. Bowl.  It’s a competition held statewide in Indiana, hence the acronym Math Academics Team for Hoosiers.  This year we traveled to St. Phillip on the West Side in uncharted territory.

Mason and his friends were quite playful before the bowl started. They had to sit there for several hours in silence so it’s probably wise that they got their inner playfulness out ahead of time.

Students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade compete from around the diocese.  Once again St. John had two teams and he was on our second.  His team was comprised of fourth and fifth grade students so they were getting their toes wet in this competition.

I had to giggle when I noticed that Mason was wearing his Flash socks.  I bet they gave him confidence.

After the standings were announced, the students received ribbons to recognize their placement.

Aren’t they an impressive team?

We had a victory dinner at McAlister’s.  Now, here is the interesting thing.  Even though Mason’s team did not have a high score compared to almost all the other teams, they still came in first!

Five classes compete in the M.A.T.H Bowl:

  • Blue Class:  teams that include 6th graders, 187 eligible students or more
  • Green Class: teams that include 6th graders, 186 eligible students or less
  • Orange Class:  teams that do not include 6th graders, 163 eligible students or more
  • Red Class: teams that do not include 6th graders, 162 eligible students or less
  • Yellow Class: teams including ONLY 4th graders, regardless of school size

The competing schools this year were:

  • Annunciation at Christ the King School (Green)
  • Good Shepherd School (Green)
  • Resurrection School (Green)
  • St. John the Baptist (Green)
  • St. John the Baptist (Red)
  • St. Joseph School (Green)
  • St. Philip School (Green)
  • St. Wendel School (Green)

Because Mason’s team was the only one competing in Red Class, they won!
