Made in the Shade

This morning started off a little wonky when we missed the bus pick up for Holiday World.  A whole domino of schedule changes followed.  I had back-to-back morning Zoom meetings starting at 8:30 am.  I planned on dialing in for the second one while we drove to Ferdinand State Forest so we could begin hiking around 10:30 am.  The bus mishap meant that Bill had to drive Mason out to work and when he returned it was already 10:30.  Driving two hours to Ferdinand and back would mean we would be starting our hike at high heat of the day and we wouldn’t able to get the full 10 miles in and get back for 5 pm mass. Everything was getting complicated.

Rather than scrap the hiking plan entirely, we headed to Audubon. There are pros and cons about the Kentucky State Park.  First, it’s close.  It’s also free and there are also nice bathrooms.  The trails are generally well maintained, not overgrown and very shady. There are many shifts in elevation so it’s a good workout.  Butterflies abound but there are not a lot of bugs or ticks, at least today. The less appealing part of Audubon is that the trails are all pretty short so to get any significant distance, we have to do some loops and sometimes track again over a previously hiked section. It was also much more populated and, by comparison, we saw many more people.  By many more, I mean just about ten on the trails but we sometimes see no one on the trails in Ferdinand and O’Bannon

That being said, any hike we do is a great one and today we added 5 miles to the count.
