The Center was abuzz last night for the annual Pinewood Derby. The weigh-in and set up went as planned and the cars were lined up and numbered for their races. Every year I am more impressed with the transformation that takes place with the blocks of wood. Click on the picture above to see it […]
The Grand Reveal
Now for the debut of Mason’s pinewood derby car. Presenting Pikachu riding on a wedge of cheese. Mason wanted the paint job on the spoiler to echo Pikachu’s tail. We hope it does well and by well, we mean we hope it wins for speed and/or style. The race is tonight so there will be […]
Fill ‘Er Up
I danced a jig at the gas station today at the sub-two dollar gas price. I don’t know how long it will last but I will enjoy it while I can.
The Making of a Car—Phase Three
Tonight before bed, Mason peeled off the masking tape from his car which had gotten several coats of yellow spray paint. Then they taped off a new area and added brown to the spoiler. The derby is on Friday night and his car is so close to being finished.
Building the Jamestown Fort
Mason’s class has been studying the founding of Jamestown in Social Studies. To culminate their studies, the students were asked to build their own replicas of Jamestown. The nice thing about this project was that it was designed to be completed fully in class. All we had to do was bring the supplies. Parents were […]
A BUG you want
Beginning with the second quarter, the students who improve (or maintain) their grades are recognized by the Kiwanis club. They receive a BUG award for Bringing Up Grades. Each one received a certificate, a plastic bug and a pencil for their efforts. There were a lot of them this quarter!
The Making of a Car—Phase Two
Tonight began the prep for the paint job. The basic shape of the car is set and the rear spoiler has been added. While Walker was at his boy scout meeting, Mason taped off parts of the car that he did not want to get painted. Here is the car’s driver. We are getting excited. […]
The Making of a Car—Phase One
It’s almost pinewood derby time and as is our custom, we started building the car over Christmas break. The design is always child-directed with adult supervision. I enjoy listening to the sounds emerge from the garage and being called over to see the phases of completion. There is always a lot of buzzing, whirling and […]
Bringing Back the Word
It’s been a while since I have officially declared a word for the year. Last year my word was Read but I didn’t declare it publically. I failed miserably. I’m not convinced that my poor outcome was due to lack of accountability but it might have been. I have gotten out of the habit of […]
A Little Self-Promotion
It is a little known fact that we live in a house with an up and coming YouTuber. However, the word will soon be out thanks to a little bit of self-promotion. For some time now, Mason has had his own YouTube channel. He created a series of videos and has more in the […]
