In a collaboration between his language arts and religion classes, Mason was tasked to identify someone he considered to be a living saint.
Saints are people who truly did more than the average person. They lived out their faith in all that they did. Some of them didn’t have an easy life, but they all made a difference in the world. They followed in the footsteps of Christ and are role models of our faith. We look heavenward for Saints to guide and help us through our journey on Earth. However, did you know there are “Saints” among us? They aren’t canonized…yet, but there are people all around us who put others first, who make sacrifices, who give their time and money, who place an importance on faith, and who choose to be happy. Do you know anyone who is a “Saint” on Earth?
He first identified and researched a saint who inspired him and then wrote the following essay that shared the similarities between his Heavenly Saint and his Earthly Saint. I was invited to the presentation of all the Saints Among Us today where he read his essay.
Puts the Grand in Grandma
by Mason Selby
Many people would like to believe that T.V. is far superior than books but my saint, Suzanne Selby, is a person who disagrees with that thought. Also, who else can say they have a grandma with a Ms. Pac-Man machine? I believe Suzanne Selby is comparable to Saint Francis of Assisi due to her constant joy, kindness towards others, and love of animals.
I have many reasons that my grandma is great. She has always been a fun person to be around. I remember the time we all bought gumballs, and we all just sat there and wouldn’t eat the gumballs because we weren’t sure if they were gumballs or jawbreakers. Also, she is a bookworm in the best way possible. She reads like she breaths. I don’t think many people can say that the dictionary is one of their favorite books! She also has the Ms. Pac-Man machine.
The saint that I am comparing her to is Saint Francis of Assisi, due to the fact that Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals. Suzanne Selby has two dogs right now, even though she didn’t buy them. One dog was being chased by coyotes when her friend screamed at the coyotes and saved the dog. The dog now lives with her and is named Barney’s Beanery, but we call him Barney. Barney is active in politics by wearing a collar with bees, so people will save the bees. My grandma also is like Saint Francis by always being happy with what she has.
The final way Suzanne is like Saint Francis is her kindness towards others. Like I said earlier, when someone couldn’t handle having a dog like Barney she didn’t hesitate to take him off their hands. A way she is kind towards me is she always is willing to talk, even if it isn’t perfect timing.
Based on what I have told you, you can now see why Suzanne Selby is comparable to Saint Francis of Assisi due to her constant joy, kindness towards others and love of animals. That is why I think she is the perfect example of an earthly saint.
Now will my mom, Suzanne Selby, come up to accept this award in the place of Suzanne Selby?
Mason gave me one of his famous hand hugs.
I’m so glad I could stand in for Suzanne Selby.
