It’s been my goal to hike at Ferdinand State Forest during every season ever since we discovered it. When our winter visit came around, I hadn’t dreamed of going after a fresh snow or to experience the magic of hiking while it was falling.
This lake near the Tulip Shelter reminded me of Ansel Adams.
Most of the trails were as familiar as always but we did come up against a few surprises like this underwater bridge where I had sat and eaten my lunch in the summer.
To get by, we had to hike up the hill a bit to stay on dry land. When we made it to the other side, I turned around to see the view from the other vantage point.
Bill and I both agreed that this tree from this perspective reminded us of Edvard Munch’s The Scream.
We had no desire to climb the fire tower today. It was too cold for that.
Just as we wrapped up, I asked Bill to take a picture with me to document our walk together.
This out take was too good to keep to myself.
We hiked 10 miles exactly. We were dressed warmly but my fingers were literally ice cubes. I have yet to find a way to keep my hands comfortable even with thermal handwarmers.
We grabbed beverages for the drive home and while we waited, Bill shared a news clip with me. He knew immediately who the 100 year old volunteer was as Bill worked with his son, Dr. Probert, at ECHO. His getting the vaccine was heartwarming. Talk about a feel good story!
This week we returned to CatholicTV for Mass and then had carry in dinner from Acapulco. It was a lovely way to finish up the day.
