I have learned a few things about painting pinewood derby cars from watching Bill and the boys. The trick is to start early. We began our cars over the Christmas break. If we hadn’t wanted the help of a special woodcutter, we might have been inclined to begin even earlier.
Second, the details that Mason and Walker like on their cars require lots of tape. Since the base coats were applied several days ago, it was safe to tape off areas and add more colors in layers.
Fine details are added with paint pens.
Finally, it’s important to allow plenty of time for the paint to dry between stages. Walker added the white stripe a few days ago, taped off for the red next and the blue on the top and sides last.
We have a few more days left to put the finishing touches on and the timing is working out well so far.
Love the look of concentration on Mason’s face.
