Tonight’s dinner was based on a suggestion from Mason to try kohlrabi. I’m not sure where he heard of this vegetable but he named it without missing a beat. Kohlrabi’s one of those vegetables that I needed to Google before shopping. I recognized it as soon as I saw it but it does not regularly hop into my shopping cart.
I prepared kohlrabi fritters. These were a mixture of grated kohlrabi, carrots, onions, eggs, flour and seasoning. In the opinion of most members, they were quite good. The requester was not as much a fan.
I also served Chicken Divan. This recipe came up in our drive to the Grand Canyon over Spring Break. I learned that it’s a dish my dad likes and it always reminds me of my friend, Kristina. I served it with quinoa and rolls.
This meal met with great satisfaction by Walker, Bill and me. I will definitely make the fritters again sometime.
As much as I like kohlrabi, I rarely buy it. Oma used to make it and if memory serves, Opa had it in the veggie garden. I LOVE it raw. Seems to me that it lost some of its attraction when cooked. I’ll have to try the fritters and some other recipes.
Ken’s mom grows Kohlrabi, so we have some every year or two. I may have even bought some at a farmers market! We eat it raw with dip.
