We have a first generation iPad for our family for years. It’s served us well but lately the boys have been asking for apps that it cannot support. However, since we are a technology-free household Monday through Friday, buying a new iPad was not something we felt a need to budget. Walker, on the other hand, saw this as an opportunity to save for his own.
Choosing what to get was no small decision. He wanted an iPad Air desperately but it was quite out of his budget and would have required a significant amount of long term saving. Walker delved into tablet research and, with Bill’s help, found the best fit for him. They considered android tablets, window tablets and iPads. However, the determining factor was obvious when we realized that Walker wanted to text with his friends who were all on iMessaging. The only option now was an Apple but which one? Because the iPad Air was out of his price range, the mini remained. The iPad Mini 3 had just been announced and its prize new feature was the fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, it was exactly the same as the Mini 2. Since Walker really wouldn’t be utilizing the sensor for its intended purpose, we convinced him that Mini 2 was the best and most affordable option.
Next came the discussion of where to purchase it. We have a Target Red Card which gives us 5% off our everyday purchases and that, coupled with our pharmacy rewards coupon, could save him an additional 5%. Ten percent off a big purchase was enticing but there was one hitch.
The only way to have the iPad mini engraved was to purchase directly from Apple and the personalization was non-negotiable.
Walker and Bill placed the order from Apple and began to track the package. They checked it every day multiple times and it was scheduled to arrive October 29th.
Much to my surprise, it arrived a day early while Walker was at school.
He had a speech meet that night so we had to wait until it was over to open it. He placed second in the meet, by the way.
Unboxing is a very big deal in our house and even more so when it’s for a long awaited device like this one.
Bill manned the camera and Mason worked on photo bombing.
The final step in the unboxing was flipping it over to see the customization which reads

I’m not sure the dust had even settled from Walker’s unboxing when Mason grabbed the family iPad and claimed it as his. Who knew Apple was running a two for one special?
Definitely can’t say it was an impulse buy with all that planning to get the best fit!
Go! Walker!
