In my head I can still hear Frank singing New York, New York after our hearing it at the end of our Yankee game on the 4th of July. It’s a pleasant way to start our last day in the city. Leaving on a 5:30 PM flight meant we had some more time to explore once more before heading to the airport.
(This was one of my favorite people sights from the trip, spotted on Park Avenue.)
Mason and I slept in a little later and then headed to Bagel Express on Lexington and 40th for bagels. I have to admit that I was a little out of practice ordering especially amidst the midtown regulars. Mason easily chose a croissant and piña colada smoothie and I finally settled upon an everything bagel with lox schmear and tomatoes.
We went back to the hotel, checked out and left our bags so we could head up to the American Museum of Natural History.
(Frogs at the subway stop for the museum were a nice reminder of Walker who is at his summer camp at Stanford.)
It was crowded but we were still able to enjoy many of the exhibits Bill and I hoped to share with Mason.
We had to get a photo in the main entrance hall.
The elephants in the middle of this hall are one of Bill’s favorites. Mason dutifully looked at every scene around the perimeter of the room and took photos of each one. We were looking for the spring haas, an animal he studied at the end of the school year, but alas, we never found it.
Gems and minerals are one of my favorites so I dragged Mason up here for a quick walk around. I’m always amazed at how many varieties there are of each one.
A few hours later we left and went to lunch at Amsterdam and 79th. Saba Pizza was great and turned out to be totally vegetarian. Who knew there was soy pepperoni?
Mason chose a slice of cheese and an order of garlic knots and I had an artichoke and spinach piece of Sicilian and scraped the toppings off the slice of vegetable.
Mason really wanted to visit the Mother ship so for the third time this trip we returned to the Nintendo store at Rockefeller Plaza. It was a quick stop but long enough for Mason to play a little.
Before I knew it, it was time to head back to the hotel, grab our bags and head off to LaGuardia. Traffic was indeed heavy but our Lyft driver got us there with a few minutes to spare. We fly to Indianapolis where Bill will meet us and then we just have the last leg of the trip until we are home, sweet home.
