10/27 :: The Bowl

Today was our last day in Washington DC and the final day of the convention as well.  Our reason for staying through the end is always the James W. Bass Pediatric Bowl where residency programs compete for the coveted Meconium Cup.  From start to finish, this is the fun side of pediatrics.  Think Jeopardy with a humorous, NPR game show spin.  The questions can be a little esoteric but they get the crowd thinking and laughing.  These are the facts that become fodder for upcoming pediatric cocktail parties.

The contenders were Johns Hopkins, NCC Pediatrics and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital.  To give a flavor of what the hour was like, here is a sampling of some of this year’s questions and how they appeared on the screens:

It’s all in good fun and everyone in my family loved it.

With the AAP all wrapped up, we gathered our luggage and our dinner from the lobby pizzeria and called an Uber to take us to the airport.  No sooner than we had gotten on the highway did we see bad news.

We were so lucky that we had allowed plenty of time to get to the airport because the delay was prolonged.  The rest of the trip was uneventful and by the time midnight rolled around, we were tucked in our own beds.  Home sweet home!

  • I’ve been waiting anxiously to hear the end of the trip!
    The game show seems like a lot of fun! Does Bill play along to see if he beats the top score? 🙂
