My birthday adventure began last night with a drive to Louisville. I was given directions about what to pack but not about where we were going. I woke up under the birthday quilt, we grabbed breakfast and then drove east.
Two hours later, we arrived at The Natural Bridge State Park in Kentucky, a place I mentioned to Bill years ago. He’s such a good listener.
It was an easy hike up the Original Trail and suddenly we popped out under the bridge.
Then it was time to climb the stairs to the upper bridge. The passage was narrow!
The topside views were awesome.
There is also a lift for those who don’t want to hike.
On our hike we found a few more paths to explore. Bill coaxed me down one that I swore was not a real route but alas, I was wrong.
We saw some beautiful flowers down there. We circled around, went up the Needle’s Eye Stairway and headed back to the car.
We had a quick bite to eat and Mason called from camp. I also heard from Walker so I was a happy momma.
Bill told me the next part of the journey could last as long or as short as we wished. We drove to Lexington and then Bill pulled out a map. He asked if I knew what we were doing (as we sat pulled over on the side of the road) and I randomly guessed, “Looking for quilt barns?”
This was the most fun ever. I am a huge fan of barns, the older and more dilapidated, the better. After about a dozen, we headed back to Louisville for dinner at a vegetarian gem called Roots.
Thai salad, Japanese eggplant and tofu in curry coconut sauce, and a bird’s nest were our choices. Yum!
Back at home, I opened presents and cards from the boys and Bill.
I was flabbergasted to receive a gift certificate for another pair of Tieks from Mason. This may become a tradition as the last time the boys were both at camp on my birthday, I received my first pair.
Walker’s guacamole card accompanied certified VW charging accessories and valve stem covers, perfectly chosen by him.
Lastly, after an already fabulous day, Bill surprised me with a handcrafted pen made from recycled barn wood. The man never ceases to show his love, thoughtfulness and resourcefulness.
What a day this was! I’m the luckiest gal ever.
Natural Bridge State Park looks amazing. I wish I could travel there in less than a full day :0)
