Between Bill’s crazy busy work schedule and evening home repairs, there was no walking this week. To make up for missed days, we decided to go for a long urban walk. We followed the Evansville Half Marathon route since I recalled most of it was on streets with sidewalks.
We started downtown by Mickey’s Kingdom and crossed over to Riverside Drive. For much of the first part of the walk, we just talked and took in the sights.
Just after we crossed Riverside and Kentucky Avenue, we spied this “tree house” and once a camera was out, we began to document more interesting landmarks and details.
It was unclear to us if this rustically crafted fence was commercially fashioned but the boards looked woven.
When the route looped us pretty close to the DoubleTree Hotel, I made a beeline for what I knew would be a clean bathroom. When we exited, this flashy grill met us. I kidded Bill that it was what my car was missing.
Near 4th and Walnut, we were greeted by this gent. We have no idea why he hangs out here but he was not the average wallflower.
Our downtown loop eventually led us up Main Street, near Bosse Field and around Garvin Park. Though we have passed this corner many times, today we noticed The Gresham House. Named for Corporal James B. Gresham, one of the first three American soldiers killed in action in World War I, this home provides transitional housing for veterans.
On the park’s perimeter was a home guarded by bats. Either they are up year round or decorating for Halloween is happening a little early.
Leaving Garvin Park on the Greenway, we passed this building. Once we fell for the fact that it looked like a bathroom, but now we are wiser and only joke that it is one.
Following the greenway, which offers no shade but is a respite from the city traffic, we traveled back downtown to our parked car.
Our total mileage was 13.64 in 4:02. The weather was a glorious 73 degrees and we only had a few sprinkles at the start of the walk. We are both glad to have a few more miles under our belts.
Can’t beat 73 in the summer! Still that was a very long walk!
