When Bill put a call out to the scout parents for a volunteer to lead the Spring hike, I don’t think he ever guessed that the hike would include a behind-the-scenes tour and early entrance at our local zoo and botanic garden. However, that is just what happened.
The tiger den leader happens to be the botanical curator at the zoo and he set an agenda to touch on many of the learning points for the scout wilderness belt loop. He introduced the kids to the snot otter, also known as the hellbender, which is on the endangered species list. Our zoo is one of several in Indiana that is working on conservation efforts.
This peacock made itself known while we were waiting to see the rhino. High above in the trees, its screeches were deafening.
Feeding the rhino was a special tour perk! I even got to touch its horn.
These animals responded to their audience. As more and more scouts drew near, the more they leaped and eventually, they were literally climbing the walls.
We hiked around the entire zoo and were so glad to be able to take advantage of our local wilderness and a number of special events set up in honor of Earth Day. Thanks to our scout dad, we had a great outdoor adventure.
Doesn’t get much better than that!
Betsy, you said it all.
