Baptism with a Back Story

Meet Zach.

Zach is Jessica’s boyfriend and she is one of my favorite baristas at Starbucks.  Over the last few years, we became friendlier after I put two and two together that she was the cantor at church who sings like an angel.

A few weeks ago, she asked me if I would pray for her as she was trying to discern if she should move to Washington where Zach is stationed with the Navy. I agreed, I prayed and shortly thereafter, Jessica told me that she was moving.  Boohoo and yahoo were my first thoughts.  I am sad to see her go and really happy for her all at the same time.

About two weeks ago, she texted me and told me Zach was coming home for Christmas and getting baptized.  She asked if I would meet with them and talk about possibly being his sponsor.

Me?

She said I had been an awesome spiritual friend and she definitely wanted to ask me.

Me?

Of course, I said yes.

I met Zach and Jessica for coffee and it turns out we have loads in common.  He is such a wonderful and warm spirit.

Fast forward to tonight when after the 5 pm mass, Father Tom baptized and confirmed Zach in the presence of his mom, stepdad, Jessica, his step mom and his dad.  My family was there as well as Jessica’s gramps. It was small and intimate and a joy to be able to play this role.

I wish them both all the best on their upcoming adventures and will keep them in my prayers.
