Cheers Of All Sorts

Today was another day of volunteering at the hospital. It was dark and cold when I arrived. All bundled up, I could be mistaken for a bank robber since all you can see of me is my eyes. Ironically, I can hardly see anything with my fogged up glasses so I would make a horrible thief.

I worked at the checkout station today and while I was there I wrote a series of notes to leave anonymously on strangers’ cars to meet the challenge on the Kindness Calendar. I enjoyed doodling a little on the postcards I made from recycled packaging.

I had delightful exchanges with several patients. I stumped a gentleman who had a November 28th birthday by asking how many times in his life he has shared his birthday with Thanksgiving. My question made him smile and gave him pause.

I also spoke with a woman whose 94 year old mother still knits Christmas stockings for her family and who occasionally sells her knitting.  The woman was so moved in telling me about her mom that she asked her husband searched on his phone for a photo of their mantel to show me. The stockings were utterly charming (similar to this vintage pattern). I suggested that the woman definitely get a copy of the pattern from her mom as well as any notes she can share, maybe even record her mother talking about the process.

I wished an early birthday to another gentleman who was born on February 29th. He looked at me with a straight face and told me he didn’t have a birthday this year. He explained he only celebrated his birthday on official leap years. Growing up, on non-leap years his mom celebrated him on February 28th and his grandmother who lived next door to him celebrated him on March 1st. He seemed happy about that.

We wrapped up at the clinic a little early so I had an extra ten minutes on my side to pick up our drive up Target order, grab coffee and meet Bill so he could hand off a Fedex envelope. I got all that done before Adoration. I sure am grateful for all the errands I can run from the comfort of my car.

Lastly, these are the last two hats I finished during the Pigskin Party. Hip, hip, hooray that I got them photographed and posted to my Ravelry page.
