Happy 50th, Bill!

Today is my sweet husband’s 50th birthday! What a milestone and what a delight to celebrate with him! If you know Bill, you know that he treated it just like any other day.  He went to work, had a full schedule and didn’t tell a soul that it was his birthday.  He likes to fly under the radar.

Because he is always an amazing birthday planner and gift giver, I always want to do his celebrations as well as he does mine.  With Covid, this became more difficult but I had a realization: I could make his birthday special in my own way.

I started by making him a sign that hung on the door from the garage to the house and decorated the mantle with our birthday garland. (The tulips he and the boys gave me for Mother’s Day accented the room beautifully.) We also made sure to cover him with the birthday quilt upon waking.

I prepared his favorite fruitcake.  These are so fun to “bake” and he actually prefers them to traditional cake. In a dessert face off, pineapple upside down cake might give fruitcake a run for its money.

Mason cooked a hearty skillet dinner of potatoes, Italian sausage and eggs. Those two savored every bite.

We sang, had fruitcake and watched Bill open his new phone and accessories.

Then the fun started. Several weeks ago, Bill got reconnected with his graduating class from residency.  Every day he would share updates with me of all the folks who he trained with.  He loved it. Behind his back I sneakily texted all of those people and invited them to a birthday zoom for this evening. The doctors jumped on from all over the country and everyone enjoyed seeing each other again.  It wasn’t the same as a true party but it was the best way to get all those folks together again given the circumstances.

The boys and I were happy to pull off a celebration for Bill and hope it proves to be memorable as part of 2020 Covid-19 edition.
