Tonight was the last pack meeting of the year and we celebrated the advancement of the scouts. First, all the boys who went on the wilderness hike received their belt loops. Then each of the dens crossed over the bridge to recognize they were moving up in the ranks.
The tigers crossed over to become bears,
the bears crossed over to become wolves,
the wolves crossed over to become webelos,
and the webelos crossed over so they wouldn’t feel left out. Actually, the webelos spend two years at this rank and work toward the arrow of light which is the highest award they can receive as cub scouts.
Then the fun really started! Tonight was our first time having the Rain Gutter Regatta. Unlike the Pinewood Derby, Rain Gutter Regatta is just for fun. The only prize is bragging rights. The scouts each built their own boat out of lightweight balsa wood and they decorated their sails.
Mason’s boat is in the bottom, middle row and features a Goomba, from Mario. We lined up all the scouts along two tables where the rain gutters were resting filled with water.
In these races, the boys put their boats in the water and then use straws to blow them down the length of the gutter. First one to the end wins.
Mason had a little bit of trouble with his sail but he had a good time all the same. Each scout got to race twice and the cub master even took a turn.
In case you are wondering, the scout won but Bill gave it a valiant effort.
Alex set up a lemonade stand for a school project and made a killing. Everyone gets far hungrier and thirstier when racing.
Then it was time to wrap up the meeting.
Tonight they did it a la Boy Scout by joining hands in a circle and singing the Scout Vesper to the tune of Tannenbaum.
Softly falls the light of day,
While our campfire fades away.
Silently each scout should ask:
“Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright?
Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared
In everything to be prepared.?”
And then they say,
“And now the great scoutmaster of all
be with you till we meet again.
God loves you and so do I.”
Now the next thing on the cub scout agenda is the final campout. Yay!
Gutter Rigatta! Such fun.
