Yorkshire Meadow Shawl

One the eve of the knitting retreat last month I received an email from one of my favorite designers asking if I would like to test her latest pattern.  I was smitten with it from the start because of the colorwork section. It was unusual and I was not sure how it was done.  I […]

The Scout Retreat

This weekend Bill and Mason attended the Diocesan Boy Scout Retreat. It is always held at the Catholic Center.  Most of the activities take place in either the gym or the meeting room/dining hall.  The scouts and most of the leaders even sleep on the floor or on cots in the gym.  It’s roughing it […]

A Daytime Date and Drive

Now that the kids are older and can get themselves to and from school and home on the bus, Bill and I have a little more leeway to adventure during school hours.  We decided to jump in the car and head north for lunch since he had the day off.  We both had a hankering […]

Black or Blue | Poetry Slam

Black or BlueBy Mason Selby   Mom’s spaghetti Kid so young, beat to confetti But the justice ain’t given, while the cop forgiven Victims beaten and treated like trash Crosses being burnt to an ash Story after story will pass, but still no answer appears Jury after jury, yet freedom ain’t here.  The issue is […]

The Council Court of Honor

The Buffalo Trace Council held its annual Council Court of Honor today.  At this gathering, troops, leaders and scouts get recognized for service, awards and accomplishments. The most exciting of those was Mason’s opportunity to be recognized for reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. It is at this court of honor, and only at this […]

All Knotted UP

Tonight the scout house was full! Considering it was only a year or so ago when we were wondering if the troop would survive without any cubs crossing over, this was amazing.  The older scouts got to help the younger ones with rank advancement.   Mason helped Andy with knot tying skills.  In the process learned […]

Mason’s Eagle Celebration

Though Mason completed his Board of Review and earned the rank of Eagle in November, we held off to have his celebration until now.  We were hoping that perhaps others might also rank up with Mason but alas, he is the only one of his group.   We met at church and Bill was the Master […]

Sweater Sisters Reunion

Last year at the knitting retreat, I bonded with two lovely ladies whom I now refer to as my sweater sisters.  We have a text chain and communicate almost daily.  We were all looking forward to meeting again this year but due to illness, Paula, the hostess, had to cancel the retreat.  Britni, Peggy and […]

Environmentally Kind

I am not a super crunchy granola person (though I do make a mean batch) but I am becoming more and more aware of what kind of footprint I want to leave. To that end, I have been seeking an alternative to cotton balls for makeup removal.  A while back I knit some little squares […]

Fried Calamari, Anyone?

Some dishes are worth fighting over.  This was one of those. Tonight Mason prepared fried calamari and boy, was it ever good!  He used a Bang Bang Shrimp recipe from a copycat cookbook and modified it for the calamari.  We had no problem polishing it off and hope he makes another batch soon.
