There was a buzz in the air as the cars were checked in and tagged for the heats. Everyone milled around them to get a good view before voting for the most creative car. I could see there was no shortage of creativity. One scout even incorporated the weights as his hood ornament. That was pretty impressive.
Bill set up the program with his right hand man who someday may end up taking over this responsibility. He loves to have a hand in technology.
The races were exciting. Here was Mason’s first heat.
Then Walker came barreling down the track.
Dads stood around laughing and telling jokes. We popped a bunch of regular scout popcorn and served some of the sour cream and onion too.
One of my favorite moments of the night was when Bill picked up the phone. Who was he calling in the middle of the races?
Then I saw the cub master reach for his phone. Apparently it was so loud in the Center that they could not hear each other from their respective sides of the track.
It was quite the crowd!
In Mason’s den, the winners for the fastest car were Tommy, Jackson and Christian.
The trophies for fastest cars overall went to Joseph, Christian and Chase. Joseph also won fastest car in Walker’s den.
The trophy for the most creative car went to Blake. It was a Lego Chima car complete with fangs.
As proof that just about anything can become a weight on the car, take a look at this Mickey Mouse car.
It was Walker’s last year of the pinewood derby. Let’s stroll down memory lane. Click on the picture to go to that year’s post.

What a journey through cub scouts it has been for Walker. He is soon on his way to cross over to the boy scouts where he will have many more adventures in store for him.
Ken loved reading this post about the old pack!
It’s fun to learn.
Your pictures are so insanely awesome. I am thinking you were an AP photographer in a past life.
That or she “gets it from her mother!”
