Red, White & Blue Day

Happy 4th of July! Last night was a total washout for fireworks down by the Ohio River so we were really happy that the skies were clear for fireworks tonight.  Yesterday we purchased quite an assortment of fireworks from our favorite store for our own show tonight.  While we waited for nightfall, we launched a few Chinese lanterns.  I love these and Bill stocks them especially for me.  The paper lanterns come flat and have a small candle or fuel source at the base.  To launch, you just gently pull open the paper pouch, light the candle, and wait for the air to heat up.  Then the magic happens.

I like to watch them go up, up and away. The wind carried the blue one back behind our house and over the field.  I watched it travel farther and farther away toward other neighborhoods.  I texted a friend who lives in that direction and was delighted when she responded that she had seen it!

Sending these off is like releasing a message in a bottle.  We never know where the wind will take them, who will see them or where they land.

Once night fell, Bill and Walker set up the barricade across the street and prepared our show.  I marveled at how Walker is now old enough to launch the fireworks.  Bill has given him many lessons about safety and he did a fantastic job. We all sat back and watched the fireworks from the driveway and when they were over, we called it a happy night.
