Speech Tournament

IMG_0143Picking up where we left off after the first speech meet, Walker competed at two more meets.  The after photos for the first three meets all look basically the same:  Walker is standing with a First Place ribbon.

When it came time for the tournament, each school only had a limited number of representatives they could send so students were selected based on points earned and, in some cases, by lottery.  Walker was chosen for his category along with Ethan, an 8th grader.

After all was said and done, he won First Place at the Tournament as well!

Overall, St. John the Baptist had an incredible showing. Our team reclaimed the first place school title for division one which represents the bigger schools and all of our students at tournament not only placed but placed at fifth place or higher. It was a great night for our speech team and a great season overall!

I do have a bragging mom moment from one of the earlier meets in the season.  It happened in the room where the students were judged.  When the students compete, they enter a room one at a time with the judges. After the first competes, he or she sits down and listened to the others who follow him or her.  Since extemporaneous is one of the categories with a smaller number of participants, they all end up seeing each other or competing with each other at one tine or another.  On this particular night, Walker was one of the last students to present.  He said that when he walked in, he heard one of the other kids turn and say to another, “Oh crap.  It’s the good kid.”

Maybe we should have named our son Talker.
