Today marked the first of Mason’s workdays for his Eagle Project.

In advance of today’s workday, Mason and Bill had put in a 811 request to make sure the area was free of utility lines.  Mason also called Mulzer Crushed Stone to arrange for 15 tons of #11 rock to be delivered to school on Monday, June 3.  He marked the location for the rock delivery with signage.

Because it was going to be a warm day, Mason and Bill picked up water, ice and snacks for the volunteers.

They asked the volunteers to bring shovels, wheelbarrows and gloves.

The base of the gaga pit is going to be cement. Before they pour it, they needed to dig a 9” deep pit. Our friend, Chris, is a wizard at framing houses and construction. He delivered a tiller and helped Mason mark the area.  They used 2 x 4s and a laser level to establish a plumb line.

The scouts and dads arrived about 10 am.  Many hands made for light(er) work but it was still a lot of work.

I grabbed a shovel too and surprised myself at how much I enjoyed digging in the dirt. We all worked to dig up the grass, dump it into the wheelbarrows and then haul it to the dirt pile.

Every now and then, Bill would till the space again to loosen up more grass. We’d remove more dirt and then step back to measure.

Two scouts would hold the plumb line and a third would measure to see if we reached the 9” depth.

About 12:30 pm the job was done!
