Worthily Recognized

Today was an amazing day at the clinic for several reasons. First, the state opened up the vaccine to the next age group meaning that those 60 and older are now eligible. Our head pharmacist, Kelly, knew the announcement was coming and prepared us that things might get really busy.

The flow of patients came in slow and steady waves and then suddenly, the floodgates opened around noon. So many patients shared that when they heard the press release, they immediately went to ourshot.in.gov to sign up.  The pharmacist said that by noon we had filled 400 open spots from this new age group. By the time the clinic closes tonight, we can estimate that over 700 vaccines will have been given today alone.

Another reason why today was so exciting was that Dan Parod, the President of St. Vincent Evansville, recognized Kelly as the Associate of the Month in February.  Dan comes through the clinic at least once a day. I met him when I first started volunteering and we have seen each other on many occasions. I was honored to be included in the circle of associates who were part of Kelly’s recognition.

Kelly was genuinely surprised and even blushed when Dan began reading page after page of commendations that fellow employees and members of the general public had made. I was gushing for Kelly because I have seen firsthand how hard she has worked. She has spent innumerous hours at the clinic since its initiation.  Her commitment is stellar and she has taught me so much about how to get to yes. She is an incredible patient advocate and one of most dedicated and compassionate people I know.

When I came out of the clinic I was greeted with temps in the 60s and bright sunshine. This wonderful weather was in such stark contrast to the ice of last week and people were out in droves taking advantage of it. I passed by a group sitting on the ledge near the clinic soaking up the sun and made them belly laugh when I told them they looked like a bunch of lizards on a log.

The day ended well with adoration, skateboarding for Mason, and my usual admin chores.
