A Grateful Day

It’s Friday and Bill’s day off however he had several appointments pretty close together.  The first was at 7:30 am followed by his long overdue visit to the ophthalmologist. Then we met to pick out his new glasses.  I had not anticipated how more challenging it would be during Covid when a fair portion of his face was covered. Thankfully, the optical department was set up safely and new pandemic precautions were in place. Bill was limited to six pairs to try on (because each pair had to be subsequently cleaned) and only when he had narrowed down his selection did they encourage him to remove his mask.  I was impressed by how the naturally the employee rolled back in his chair six feet when Bill was unmasked and rolled forward again when it was safe.  This experience went well and we were done in a short amount of time.

Just before lunch, Bill’s nurse texted him to say that the vaccine clinic was winding down for the morning and that she could move his evening appointment up. He dashed out the door and headed to the hospital. After getting it, he immediately started texting again with his friends for their reactions to the dose.

Otherwise, the day was pretty uneventful. I am grateful I was able to stay warm and cozy inside.  I am grateful I spoke with my parents for what we are calling our Friday chat. I wanted to set up something regular since the time change and our schedules do not always match up spontaneously. I am grateful we could order dinner in and support our local Indian restaurant.  I’m also grateful that we could all be together for dinner tonight.  It looks like the weekend is going to be fairly mellow and unscheduled which is something lovely to look forward to.

Lastly, on a political front, this week has been a train wreck.

Wednesday, January 6th, Congress confirmed Joe Biden’s electoral vote as president. President Trump gave a speech declaring that the election had been stolen and told his followers to never give up.  Masses of Trump supporters rallied outside the Capitol and eventually stormed the building.  Four people died in the mayhem. According to a Washington Post article, Trump “exhorted his followers, he spoke falsehoods, he took to Twitter, he attacked the media, and he confronted the Constitution of the United States.”  Subsequent to that, Twitter locked down President Trump’s account. I don’t know that THAT has ever happened. The state of affairs in our country leaves me speechless.
