More than Just Breakfast with Santa

Not really.

This year, instead of the traditional Breakfast with Santa, the parish shifted to a full day of Advent celebrations and activity.  It incorporated the former family event which included games, crafts, stories and a visit from Santa with a craft bazaar and the youth group’s reenactment of Las Posadas. The Boy Scouts manned the griddles and made the pancakes.  Mason and Walker represented our family, showing up bright and early to serve.

Meanwhile, Bill was in Nashville this weekend for continuing education.  He has lectures and presentations in the morning and then is free in the afternoon and evenings.

Yesterday afternoon, he went to the Frist.

They are exhibiting the work of Eric Carle, a children’s book author and illustrator I have always loved.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of my favorite books growing up and it remains in high regard today.

Another interesting exhibit was Osgemeos: In Between.  These Portuguese artists, Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo, have a whimsical style.  According to the Frist, the twin brothers are known for their vivid and playful public murals and studio work. Their art is influenced by Brazilian folklore, hip-hop and more.  Their work tells stories of fantasy, family and social change in Brazil and beyond. They have left their mark graffiti style in many metropolitan cities.

The Frist exhibit guide to Osgemelos delves more deeply into their style and their website details more of their portfolio and story.

This last photo is from Murals of North Nashville Now and is entitled Where we were. Where we are. Where we are going.  It was created by Nuveen Barwari, Marlos E’van, and Courtney Adair Johnson with Opportunity NOW and International Teen Outreach Program participants. This exhibit displays murals made by artists with strong ties to the neighborhood and thus much of the imagery reflects both its rich history and current social issues.

Bill has one more day away.  The boys and I are making the best of mother/son time and looking forward to seeing Bill tomorrow night.

I would have loved that Eric Carle exhbit. Googled it but saw it ended February.
I had hoped to go to Eric Carle Museum (Mass) on our NE roadtrip but no time.
